IML
What or Who is an IML?
The abbreviation IML comes from an English phrase International Mountain Leader and in principle it has three meanings. It is a title or a certificate, which manifests that its holder has an exactly stipulated extent of knowledge and skills necessary for the leading of walking parties in high altitude conditions to the exactly stipulated level of technical difficulty.
Further, it is a person who received this title after completing the prescribed extent of education. Last but not least, it is the profession which conduct has precise rules set in the Worldwide Standard for Conditions of Access to and Practise of the Profession of International Mountain Leader.
IML is a result of the international cooperation of UIMLA member countries, which have set as their goal to ensure that during excursions, treks, expeditions and many other activities in high altitude conditions the walking parties are led by qualified professionals.
That is why an IML is a proof of international examination, verified quality, professionalism, technical and physical skills and practise of the person who leads walking parties in high altitude conditions.
IML represents in many aspects one of the guarantees for the safety of the walking party.
However, for those who lead walking parties or intend to do so, for profit or as a hobby, an IML is in particular a proof of an internationally recognized right to lead walking parties in all mountain terrains and during each season of the year, with an exclusion of areas which cannot be usually overcome without a use of alpinism techniques. IML, as a professional, is also authorized to operate in permanent snow fields if they are a part of an internationally recognized hut-to-hut trek.
