Who is a Mountain Leader?
Czech mountain leader has to be a graduate of the requalification course for mountain leading activity accredited by the State. This qualification authorizes him or her to lead parties in the mountains in the extent covered by the content of the course.
International mountain leader (IML) must accomplish the education according to the International Mountain Leader standard declared by the UIMLA (Union of International Mountain Leaders Associations). Czech Mountain Leader Association (CMLA) became an aspirant member of this association in the autumn of 2008 and it is currently working on the installation of the IML education based on the UIMLA platform in the Czech Republic.
International mountain leader of the UIMLA and international mountain guide of the IFMGA/UIAGM are at the moment the only internationally recognized qualifications for work in mountains in Europe and they differ in the extent of competencies they give to their holders based especially on the difficulty of the terrain. While a mountain guide can work during the whole year in every mountain terrain, a mountain leader can only lead clients in such areas or on such routes where it is usually not necessary to use climbing techniques.
